Can I use HDMI output on my motherboard and still connect a graphics card?

I'm building a mini-itx build tonight and have most the parts. If I use the HDMI output on the motherboard will the graphics card be any use or do I have to use the outputs on the graphics card for it to have any use?

Normally you can't use the onboard graphics output if you install a separate graphics card.

However you can buy graphics cards with HDMI outputs.

Also most modern cards that don't have HDMI, come with 2 DVI outputs which are compatible with HDMI inputs on TVs, you just need an adaptor which is not very expensive.

The only slight drawback if you use the DVI to HDMI adaptor is that you don't get any sound via HDMI.
